Did You Have Amnesia After Your Car Accident?

Amnesia

If you were in a severe car accident, there is a chance you may have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). There are differing degrees of severity involved in TBIs however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the leading cause of TBI’s that require treatment in a hospital or result in a fatality are related to car accidents. In many cases, one of the symptoms of TBI is amnesia, which is memory loss.

Amnesia and TBI

If you or someone you love was involved in a catastrophic car accident that resulted in a TBI with amnesia, you should seek immediate medical evaluation and treatment. Oftentimes the signs of a TBI are subtle and do not present themselves for hours or days following an accident. In some cases, a victim may slowly start to feel that they can not remember certain things, or in other cases they can not remember anything at all from the time immediately following the accident. No matter how a TBI or amnesia presents themselves, make sure to immediately seek medical attention as these medical conditions can severely impact the future of a person’s health and well-being.

Types of Amnesia

Not all TBIs and amnesia are the same. It takes a medical expert to make a diagnosis and determination due to the severity of this condition. The following are the most commonly seen types of amnesia following a car accident.

  • Anterograde amnesia. This is a more minor form of amnesia and occurs immediately after a car accident. In these cases, a victim will have the inability to form or create memories for a certain period of time following the car accident. This is considered to be the most common type of memory loss in car accident victims. It can be temporary or long-term.
  • Post-traumatic amnesia. In some cases, immediately following a car accident, a victim may be in a state of shock. In other cases, a victim is simply in a complete state of confusion following a car accident where their brain simply does not process information correctly. This type of amnesia is not memory loss per se, but only a short term memory loss immediately following the accident.
  • Retrograde amnesia. When victims can not seem to remember anything prior to the car accident, they may be suffering from this type of amnesia.

Signs and Symptoms of Amnesia

Some victims do not exhibit any symptom of TBI or amnesia immediately following a car accident. However, if you notice any inability to remember at all, short or long term memory loss, difficulty concentrating, foggy thinking, confusion, the inability to organize thoughts, the inability to process conversations and thoughts in a normal way or in normal time, that victim may be suffering from a TBI or amnesia and should seek medical attention immediately. The longer a TBI or amnesia is left untreated the more likely a condition may worsen or become permanent.
