What Is Road Rash?

Motorcycle6

Motorcyclists often ride with minimal protection. When an accident takes place, motorcyclists can be tossed off their bikes in an instant. Or even worse, a rider may be fiercely dragged along the road for far distances. In either situation, motorcyclists commonly suffer for road rash.

Road rash is one of the most painful and debilitating injuries a motorcyclist can suffer. The condition results from the motorcyclist’s skin scraping alongside the road. While some riders wear leather jackets, gloves, boots and protective pants, this only provides minimum protection. The consequences can be very damaging.

The Three Degrees of Road Rash

  1. 1st Degree Road Rash – Consists of minor injuries such as chafing, scratches and cuts. Most motorcyclists that suffer from this type of road rash can health without any medical attention. It is still important for motorcyclists to clean and dress their wounds.
  2. 2nd Degree Road Rash – Injuries in this category consist of a break in the skin; however, there is no effect to the deeper tissues. Commonly occurring symptoms include pain, bleeding, puffiness and bad blisters. Riders with 2nd degree road rash should seek medical attention, but should be able to health without terrible scarring.
  3. 3rd Degree Road Rash – This is the most severe of the three types of road rash. Riders with this type typically suffer from complete loss of skin. The tissues under the skin, such as fat, muscle and bone may be totally exposed. Additionally, muscles are often torn off the bone. Bad infections that may require amputations or various surgeries are often associated with 3rd degree road rash. This type of road rash has long-lasting effects on victims’ lives.

Emotional Trauma

Although this type of road rash injury is commonly overlooked, emotional trauma can have devastating effects on victims. Road rash victims may struggle with self-confidence issues. Horrible scars, disfigurements or limb losses often lead to twisted views regarding their self-image. These negative views often take a large toll on victims’ social lives. This leads to depression and emotional instability.

Compensation for Road Rash Injuries

Road rash commonly leaves victims with horrible health difficulties and may require costly medical care and lengthy recovery periods. Further, road rash sufferers often end up missing work and losing related wages.

In incidences of road rash, victims are entitled to compensation for all economic and noneconomic losses. Victims may be able to recover damages for pain and suffering, lost wages, reduced future earning potential, present and future medical costs, disability, and emotional trauma.
